Whistled up a scratch crew at short notice (one short ! ) as had a call from an enthusuastic couple from Norwich, England passing through Nelson and very keen for a row i.n a SAS. (Iknow the feeling well !) Both were regular club rowers of the st ayles skiff and other very interesting row boats. It was great to hear from and meeet up with Adrian and Lynne and share their enthusiasm for coastal rowing and traditional fixed seat rowing in general. We took to the water with one crew short but understood that Toroa would move along pretty well anyway. Adrian and Lynne showed good skills and Mark stepped up on only his second time in the boat. Pretty straight forward going down the harbour but slammed into an outgoing tide and head wind on the way back that tested outr mettle a bit and we felt we had had a good workout by the time we returned to the marina. Turns out Adrian had impeccable references in traditional rowing , owning his own Thames rowing skiff built in1895, and needing restorative work from Adrian. Adrian let slip he also rows on the royal rowing barge Gloriana, which has to be a memorable and notable experience. We had a great discussion of all manner of things to do with traditional rowing, exchanged contacts and hope to meet up sometime soon in "the old country" to further share the rowing experience. Always pleased to host overseas rowers who are passing through and it was a pleasure to host Adrian and Lynne.
