We took a leisurely cruise round the harbour today with a skeleton crew of Denis, Russell and his two friends from Wellington, Jill and Brian. We've discovered Toroa hardly misses a beat even with one crew down, so our guest rowers still got a pretty good idea of how the boat performs despite an uneven distribution of oars. We took in the first boulder bank bach and then headed for the historic old original lighthouse' which dates from the 1840s and was imported to Nelson as a cast iron kitset from England. often as not, conversations come round to boats and Brian informed us he is working on a 18 foot skin over frame sailing canoe with an outrigger. Sounds fascinating and an absolutely worthy traditional boat to have a crack at for a build. Looking forward to seeing it on the water some time soon.
