Rowing in the Waimea estaury presents certain new variables to coastal rowing and significantly one of the most mportant is depth of water. So taking on the five islands challenge :- Oyster / Rabbit / Best / Saxton / Pig - proved only just do-able for our hearty crew of adventurers - Peter, David, Russell, Denis, and new crew Lloyd. Pretty straight forward except depth of water in patches - a really good clue it's getting too shallow is when your oar hits the bottom, which often followed upwith the keel doing the same. It's a consoling fact that we could just jump out and walk home anyway, but that's not really the point of the exercise. New crew Lloyd showed good form and we are keen to meet the other love in his life - Alice - his Wellford designed single rowing skiff - which is soon to arrive in Nelson. A great workout for the crew -we kept a good pace and rhythm- and enjoyed the flat water the estaury environment provided.
