Rails are one the heaviest objects to be moved during the construction of a railroad. During the time when railroads were being built in Puerto Rico, this was a manual job to be performed by workers.
Rail Tongs is the specialized tool used to move rails (see figure). A Rail Tong was operated by two workers. The tongs were set on the upper part of the rail (know as the head). Each worker then grabbed one of the handles of the tongs. The tongs then closed around the head of the rail allowing workers to move it. Work parties consisted of four to six workers depending on the weight and legth of the rail.
The Rail Tongs in the museum's collection was originally part of the Wilfredo Molina's collection. Mr. Molina was the founder of two well loved railroad attractions of decades past.
