Assignment:

College Students: Some critics charge that Dickens, in much of his work, failed to create meaningful characters because he exaggerated them to parodic extremes. Do you find this a fair assessment of his characterization in A Tale of Two Cities? Does the author’s use of caricature detract from his novel’s ability to speak to human nature? Essay response due Wed, Apr 24. Discussion with classmates due Fri, Apr 26.

Journal: Do not write the prompt in your journal.

"In this chapter, we see Carton bemoaning his empty existence while

speaking privately with Lucie, who tries to comfort him and offer suggestions

to improve his life. How realistic do you find the characters in the

novel? Write a letter to Charles Dickens, imagining that you are living in

1859 and have just finished reading the novel. Tell him what you think

of his characterization and how it either improves or weakens the book.

For example, is Carton too weak and dispirited to be believable? Is Lucie

too much of an “angel”? Is Marquis Evrémonde too evil? Is Darnay too

good? Use details to argue your point as to whether the characterization

is masterful, oversimplified, or somewhere in between."
