Chapters 1-17 Statements/Questions:

1. Throughout these first chapters, Joe continually defends Pip's sister, Mrs. Joe. Do you agree with any of Joe's characterizations of Mrs. Joe? What do we learn about Joe's personality/character from this?

2.Between Biddy and Estella, who do you believe is the better match for Pip? Whom does Pip seem to prefer? Why do you think he prefers this person?

3. What do you think of Pip's character/personality? What aspects of Pip do you like? What traits do you dislike?

4. How does Dickens create mood through the settings and vivid descriptions?

Chapters 18-32 Questions (Provide textual evidence!)

1. Pip is very excited to receive news of his benefactor and the "great expectations" planned for him. Yet, he continually finds himself lonely, dissatsifed with his life, and generally unhappy as the story continues. Why do you think this is?

2. Pip changes the way he speaks to and thinks about Joe and Biddy. What do you think about this change in his personality?

3. Mr. Jaggers is obsessed with washing his hands. Why do you believe he is so compulsive about this?

4. What do you think of the character of Herbert? Is he a good friend/influence to Pip? Why or why not?

5. Pip says this about Miss. Havisham, "She had adopted Estella , she had as good adopted me, and it could not fail to be her intention to bring us together. She reserved it for me to restore the desolate house, admit the sunshine into the dark rooms, set the clocks a-going, and the cold hearths a blazing, tear down the cobwebs-in short, do all the shining deeds of the young knight of romance, and marry the princess." Do you believe these are Miss. Havisham's plans for Pip and Estella? Why or why not?

Chapters 33-48 Questions (Provide textual evidence!)

1. Estella repeatedly warns Pip that he should not pursue her. Who is to blame when he finally realizes he is not meant for Estella (Miss H? Pip? Estella? Magwitch? Jaggers?)

2. How has the money changed Pip? Is he really becoming a gentleman (consider how he treats others and how he spends his money)?

3. Estella is cruel to Pip, many suitors, and Miss. H. Is she responsible for the coldhearted person that she is?

4. Now that we know who Pip's benefactor is, what hints did we have that it was this person?

1. Miss Havisham suffers a tragic experience. Does she deserve this experience? Should Pip accept her apology?

2. Pip figures out who Estella's biological parents are. Who are they? Why is it ironic that these are her parents? Should Pip tell her the truth?

3. How does Pip change in his affection for Magwitch? Do you have sympathy for Magwitch?

4. Pip was going to ask Biddy to be with him for the rest of his life, but he choose not to tell her once he realizes that things have changed once he returns to the forge. Who do you think is the best match for Biddy? Who is the best match for Pip? Explain your answer.
