人のための緑地

2つの日本庭園を訪れた。
足立美術館と、石照庭園。

この二つの庭園は、
全く異なるコンセプトを持つ。
足立美術館は、絵画としての庭園。
石照庭園は、地域の人が集い使うための庭園である。

世界で最も美しい日本庭園として何年も讃えられている足立美術館は、
圧巻の美しさであったが、
私は庭としての違和感を感じた。

もちろん、窓越しの世界であるから
そのすぐ外に生きて存在するのだが、
どうも映像を見ているかのような感覚になる。
美しい。が、視覚以外に感じられる方法がないのである。
風を感じたり、音に耳を澄ませたりできない庭園は初めてで
新しい体験だった。

対して石照庭園は、
地域の人々が集うことを目的としている庭園である。
BBQや流しそうめんをしたり、ライブをしたり、池に船を浮かべたり。
管理の仕方が日本庭園であるだけで
いわゆる日本庭園の厳格さはなく、
そこはもう、一種の公園のような、地域の緑地であった。

伝統と親しみやすさを程よく組み合わせるという
私の思い描いていた理想がここにあったとは！
連れてきていただいた先輩に感謝しかない。

訪問時はイベントを開催していなかったので
映像の中でしか見られなかったのが悔やまれるが、
いつでも誰でも受け入れてくれる、
温かく寛容な雰囲気が、全体に流れていた。

部外者の私でも、
このためにもう一度島根に行きたいと思うくらいだから、
きっと地域住民の方にとっては
帰ってきたと感じられる場所なのだろうと思う。
こんな地域の緑地をつくりたいものだ。

Green Spaces for People

 I visited two gardens:
Adachi Museum of Art, and Sekisho Garden.

 These two gardens have completely distinctive concepts.
Adachi mMseum creates gardens as paintings.
Sekisho garden is for locals to gather. 

Adachi museum, praised yearly for having the most beautiful Japanese garden in the world, was indeed aesthetic.
However, I felt slight discomfort as a garden.
It does exist alive beyond the window frame, of course, but I felt as if I’m looking at a video.
Beautiful- but had no way to feel it aside from visual stimulation.
Visiting a garden where I can’t sense the wind or listen to some sounds was a completely new experience to me. 

In contrast, Sekisho Garden opened for the locals to gather up.
It is maintained in Japanese garden form-
but it’s one of the local green spaces, and rather like a park.
They holds events like BBQ, flowing somen, music live, or place a boat on the pond. 

My ideal Japanese garden existed there!
I cannot thank enough for my friend bringing me over. 

Unfortunately, I visited when no events were hold that I could only feel its vibe through the video.
However, a warm, welcoming atmosphere was covering the garden.
This garden would be a place for locals to feel they’re back,
considering an outsider like me being motivated to visit Shimane again for the garden.
I hope to create such green spaces in the future- ones truly for the local communities.
