理想の自然って何だ

里山や田園は日本の原風景と言われ、
日本人の理想の自然と言われる。

そういわれるのもごもっともだ。
新潟で見た風景も美しかった。
豊かな森、湧き出る水。
人々はその恵みに毎日感謝をしながら、田んぼを耕す。
森が、棚田を介して海に続く。
ランドスケープアーキテクトがどれだけ頑張っても実現できない風景。
何百年もの歴史があり、しっかりと土地に馴染んだ風景である。

しかし、この人々の憧れを支える農家の現状は
非常に厳しいものである。

特に金銭的に苦しい農業の世界。
自分の子供には、継がずに夢を追いかけてほしい
と思う農家さんが多いからこそ、
増えていく草ぼうぼうの農地。

草地から木が生えるのに10年。
今は視界の開けた草地でも、
10年後は木々が生い茂り
長く受け継がれてきた田園の面影は
跡形もなく消えているかもしれない。

人は何を見たいんだろう。

日本人にとって理想の自然である里山や田園の緑。
それっぽいのを都市に作ればいいかと思ってたけど、
実際に使われてる里の緑はなくなっても、
追い求め続けていいの？
過去の幻想にすがりついていていいのだろうか。

理想の自然、緑地とは何か。
机上で空想の世界に飛ぶ前に、
全ての日本人が現状を自分の目で見て、
もう一度考える必要がある。

Ideal Nature

Landscapes with woodlands and rice fields are considered to be typical to Japan
and are regarded as "ideal nature" by many citizens.

This totally make sense-
the scenery I saw in Niigata was wordlessly beautiful.
From lush woodlands, pure, cold spring water flourishes;
its flow leads to terraced rice fields where people thankfully receives the blessings of nature; and it eventually pours to the sea.
A scenery which landscape architects can never create:
with centuries of history, the landscape is solidly tailored to the region.

However, such admiration of people are built on harsh environment for farmers.

Agriculture is especially tough financially.
Since many farmers don't expect their kids to succeed the work but rather recommends to pursue their dream,
weed-grown grassland increases.

10 years required for trees to grow from grasslands.
Imagine the those grassy plots, currently open visually, turning into a wild woodland in 10 years time-
the beautiful and historical landscape of rice field may be vanishing completely.

What do people want to see?

Woodlands and rice fields as the Japanese's ideal nature.
I used to think creating such-looking green spaces in cities may help people adore Japanese nature more,
but should we pursue those scenery even if it comes to the point where actually-used ones hardly exists?
Can we stick onto the glorified old landscapes?

What is "ideal nature"?
Before flying off into one's dream on the desk,
every Japanese should see the current situation with their own eyes and reconsider.
