What is 'Nature' that We're Trying to Conserve?

One of the things that fascinated me when I visited Bournemouth was the abundance of enormous mature trees: especially pines. They existed everywhere, not only in parks but even in residential areas, and I found that as a huge asset of the local landscape.

The impression remained strong when I visited a nearby country park. Scattered amongst the field of heather and gorse were intricate-branched birches and sturdy striking pines. Apparently, this landscape reflects the history of the land used for pine wood production. I was already familiar with heather fields from multiple visits to the Peak District, so I was moved by the eye-catching presence of trees.

However, something else also caught my attention: piles of felled pine trees. I heard that most of pines are planned to be cut down, because they interfere with the growth of heather. I was very disappointed with this future, especially because I thought the trees were an integral part of the region's character. 

Heathland is a landscape created by extensive intervention of human beings.　It is currently in decline, and there is a need to protect rare flora and fauna that inhabit only in such environment.  I knew such things as facts, but this experience made me question the value of conservation when it interrupts natural progression and wipes out a historical layer of the land. 

Conservation of nature, in reality, may be such a human-centred idea.

自然の保全て何だろう

イギリス・ボーンマスに行ったとき感動したことの一つは、大木、特にマツの大木の多さである。公園はもちろん、住宅地でさえ、あちこちにマツの大木が見られ、地域特有の長所に思われた。

これは近郊のカントリーパークに行ったときも同様だった。あたり一面に広がるカルーナやハリエニシダの中に、点在する繊細な枝ぶりの白樺とどっしりと構える松。どうやらこの土地は松の木材の生産地として使われていた歴史があるらしい。カルーナの平原はPeak Districtにてある程度見慣れていたので尚更、目を奪う木々の存在に感動した。

ただ、同時に見られたのは切り倒された松の山である。どうやらカルーナの生育を邪魔するから、と松の木は大半を切り倒す話らしい。この地域特有の個性だなと感動していたからこそ、どうも残念であった。

ヒースランドと呼ばれるこの植生は、過剰とまで言える人の介入が作り上げる風景である。現在は減少傾向にあり、そこにのみ生息する希少な動植物を守る必要がある。そういったことは事実として知っていたけれど、自然のサイクルを止め、土地の歴史を消し去ってまでその保全をする価値はあるのか、と思ってしまった。

自然の保全というものは、結局は人間のエゴなのかもしれない。
