University Orchard
I was very fortunate to be asked to design the university orchard.
I was very fortunate to be asked to design the university orchard.
I applied a very simple design and layout, considering that student volunteers will be responsible for its construction and maintenance.
The design incorporates the rich existing greenery, including ekianthus and abelia hedges, as well as maple, camellia, summer mandarin and persimmon trees.
It also utilises other materials from the university campus, such as stones and logs.
This not only offers students the opportunity to enjoy harvesting and experience the changing seasons, but also provides a space where they can learn about the environment and the history of the university.
Among the three spaces, the one in the middle is equipped with stone benches arranged in a semi-circle, made from curbstones that dates back to the wartime period and are still present on campus. It serves as a gathering spot for small classes and club meetings.
In contrast, the spaces at the eastern and western ends are furnished with log benches and tables, crafted from trees on campus that had to be felled. These areas offer a cozy setting for small group of students to eat or study.
