History

Mineral has a long history of being an important stop along the Highway for visitors traveling to Lassen Peak. Once upon a time, it took days to get from Red Bluff to Lassen Volcanic National Park by stagecoach. Tired and hungry passengers would gratefully avail themselves of food and lodging at "stations" along the way, especially Mineral. For many years, a concessioner operated a ski rope tow and chair lift near the Old Chalet (where the Kohm yah-mah-nee Visitor Center now stands). This made Mineral a popular destination for skiiers long after automobiles replaced travel by horse. Mineral residents have often worked in the Park itself or at the Park Administration HQ in town. Generations of families consider Mineral home, even if they live elsewhere, too.
