The Climb Leader: High Angle Rescue (CL:HAR) badge is valid for 3 years. CL:HAR is required for D or E-level climbs. E-level provisional and full climb leaders who have an AR High Angle Rescue badge within the last 3 years may request a CL: HAR badge. Those who have had the AR High Angle Rescue badge for more than 3 years must take the Climb Leader High Angle Rescue recertification assessment.

The High Angle Rescue badge (as opposed to the Climb Leader: HAR badge) may be obtained through taking Advanced Rock (see Curriculum below). One must have the High Angle Rescue badge before one can request/earn a Climb Leader:HAR badge. At this time, please reach out to the Advanced Rock Committee with any questions regarding alternative ways to earn the High Angle Rescue badge.
CL HAR recertification
The HAR recertification program was completely reworked in 2022 - Thanks to Christine Troy and Chris LeDoux!
In order to recertify your CL:HAR badge, you need to complete the Instruction Module and Assessment Module. The Practice Module is optional, but recommended if your HAR skills are rusty and/or predate the rework of the HAR program.
Instruction Module (Required) – self paced online classwork to review HAR techniques, best practices, and updates. (estimated 2-4 hours)
Practice Module (Optional) – half day or evening guided practice at the MMC. This is a time to get on the wall with a partner and work through all the required skills with support from an instructor and fellow class participants. You may attend the Practice Module as many times as you would like. (estimated 3-4 hours)
Assessment Module (Required) – half day or evening assessment at the MMC. In order to pass the assessment, you need to successfully complete a rescue for the three scenarios described here. There is no practice time built into the Assessment Module, you should come practiced and prepared to perform all three assessment tasks. (estimated 3-4 hours)
***Having a prior CL:HAR badge is a prerequisite for taking only the Assessment Module***
