To comply with government regulations, safety considerations, and to avoid overcrowding routes, the Climbing Committee has set limits on the maximum and minimum number of climbers allowed on official Mazama climbs. Federal agencies have also set limits for specific National Parks, Wilderness Areas, National Monuments, and certain other areas. It is the Climb Leader's responsibility to determine what limits are in effect in advance of the climb to ensure that their party size complies with all rules and regulations. Be aware that party size limits can change during the climbing season and if you plan to camp in a wilderness vs. day use.
The minimum number of climbers for an official Mazama climb is 4. It is not necessary that all 4 climbers reach the summit, only that a minimum of 4 climbers depart from the trailhead and make the attempt. The climb must be canceled in the event that the minimum requirement of 4 climbers is not met prior to departing the trailhead.
The maximum number of climbers on an official Mazama climb:
● A, B, and C climbs max. = 12 climbers
● D climbs max. = 9 climbers
● E climbs max. = 6 climbers
There is no obligation to take the maximum number of climbers.
