Rainier climbing permits are a two- to four-step process:
(Optional, but highly recommended): Make reservation for a team climbing permit through recreation.gov. 2/3 of permits are reserved (well!) in advance. Reservations will be held until noon of the day your permit begins. After noon, your reservation will be cancelled, unless you email morawildernessreservations@nps.gov, or talk to a ranger at: 360-569-6650. If your reservation is held for a late pickup, it will be held until closing time at 5:00pm.
Depending on latest policies and season (usually May-September), each vehicle going to Sunrise or Paradise may need to get a timed entry permit in advance at recreation.gov.
Each climber must pay the Annual Climbing Fee ($68) each year (good for the entire calendar year). You pay this BEFORE coming to the park. Bring proof of your fee and you ID with you to the park.
Each climbing party (with or without a reservation) must obtain a Climbing Permit in-person at a Mount Rainier National Park ranger station (one per party, up to 12 people per party). You may also need to fill out a wilderness permit at the same time.
