This recipe has seen use as a postpartum recovery food as far back as the Tang dynasty in China. Seaweed was seen to have natural detoxifying and health benefits, which may be chalked up to the high calcium, iodine and fibre, and has become a symbolic and traditional mainstay in Korean maternal foods. Eels are supposedly able to boost male fertility, and have become a cultural male fertility food in South Korea. This notion is most likely derived from their phallic shape, but eel is high in protein and omega-3 fatty acids and is good for blood pressure as well as maintaining healthy bones and cholesterol.
