Luke 6:27-36
Love for Enemies
27 “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.
32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
When Jesus says, "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you" (Matthew 5:44), He is acknowledging the reality of human conflict and animosity...Jesus is presupposing we will have neighbors we do not like...He is not suggesting that we should seek out enemies or provoke conflict, but rather that we should respond to hostility with love, kindness, and compassion...He does not want us to seek revenge against those we do not like...This command is a paradox, as it challenges our natural inclination to retaliate or seek revenge...However, it is a powerful expression of God's LOVE and Grace...By loving our enemies, we demonstrate the transformative power of the Gospel and the possibility of overcoming hatred and division...Jesus wants us to be in unity with our neighbors…After all He wants us to love God and to love neighbor...His command to love our enemies is not merely a suggestion but a Divine Imperative...It is a reflection of God's character, who LOVES all people, even His enemies...By following Jesus' example, we can become like agents of reconciliation and peace in a world that is torn apart by conflict...
So we learn from Jesus...Jesus' command to "love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you" happens to be one of the most challenging and countercultural teachings in the Bible...It challenges our natural inclination to retaliate, be mean to others, and seek revenge on them…He is urging us instead to respond with love and compassion...At first glance, this command may seem impossible...How can we love those who hate us?...How can we pray for those who persecute us?...Yet, Jesus, the embodiment of Divine LOVE, calls us to a higher standard...He invites us to participate in His redemptive work by extending love and forgiveness to our enemies...By loving our enemies, we defy the cycle of violence and hatred...We break down barriers and build bridges of understanding...We demonstrate the transformative power of God's LOVE, even in the most difficult circumstances and even with our enemies...
When we love our enemies, we are not condoning their actions or compromising our values...Rather, we are choosing to respond to evil with good, to overcome hatred with love...This is a radical act of faith that requires the power of the Holy Spirit...It's important to note that loving our enemies does not mean that we should tolerate their harmful behavior...We may need to set boundaries and protect ourselves from harm...However, we can still pray for their salvation and well-being...
Ultimately, Jesus’ command to love our enemies is a reflection of God's character...God LOVES us unconditionally, even when we are unlovable...He forgives all our sins, not just some of them...By loving our enemies, we are imitating God's LOVE and forgiving power, and participating in His redemptive work...By embracing this seemingly impossible command, we can experience the fullness of God's LOVE and Grace in our own lives...We can become disciples of reconciliation, bringing healing and hope to a broken world...We are becoming merciful, just as our Father is merciful...
