Luke 1:46-56
Mary's Song
46And Mary said:
"My soul glorifies the Lord
47and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48for he has been mindful
of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
49for the Mighty One has done great things for me—
holy is his name.
50His mercy extends to those who fear him,
from generation to generation.
51He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
52He has brought down rulers from their thrones
but has lifted up the humble.
53He has filled the hungry with good things
but has sent the rich away empty.
54He has helped his servant Israel,
remembering to be merciful
55to Abraham and his descendants forever,
even as he said to our fathers."
56Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.
When Mary was pregnant with Jesus, she went to visit her relative Elizabeth...The two were happy for each other and their pregnancies... Elizabeth would give birth in a few months to John the Baptist...Mary would give birth to our Savior, Christ the LORD...
Mary sings a song of praise to God for the coming of her new Son...Mary's song is known as the Magnificat...Magnificat means magnify... Mary is very happy she sings that her soul glorifies the LORD, and her spirit rejoices in God, her Savior...She next sings about others from the past and to the future of how God has had mercy on those who fear Him from generation to generation...He has brought down rulers (in the past), but has lifted the humble...He has helped his servant Israel to remember the merciful, to Abraham and his descendants forever (in the future)...
She sings about how God helps the poor...He (God) has filled the hungry with good things, but has sent the rich away empty...Jesus would grow up poor, in a poor family, and would see the things He had, and would see what the wealthy grew up...Mary would raise her Great Son, even in this a poor environment, He would turn out to be free of sin and the Greatest One to walk the earth...God ministers to the poor...He is a friend of the poor...God satisfies the poor in spirit...
It is not unusual that Mary is happy and singing...Imagine how it must feel to be the one who is holding the Son of God...How must she feel?...Is she always filled with the Holy Spirit, during her pregnancy?...She must feel as good as a mother has ever felt with our Savior in her womb...The most important birth in the history of man was about to happen with Mother Mary, a servant of God in the middle of all of this happiness...There would never be another birth like this One...No wonder she was singing...Mary is blessed (from now on all will call her blessed (verse 48))...Joy to Mary...
We are told she stays with Elizabeth three months and then returns home...What a time to be on earth...His disciples would be able to eyewitness so much...In a few months two of the most important children would be born in Christian history...Forever, Joy to the world....
