Luke 4:23
Physician, heal yourself
23 Jesus said to them, "Surely you will quote this proverb to me: 'Physician, heal yourself! Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.' "
Jesus maybe saying that the readiness and ability of physicians to heal sickness in others while sometimes they are not able or willing to heal themselves. This suggests something of 'the mechanic always drives an old car (that runs great)', i.e. mechanic is too poor and too busy to afford to fix the exterior of their own car...It also suggests that physicians, while often being able to help the sick, cannot always do so and, when sick themselves, are no better placed than anyone else...
People in Jesus' hometown were expecting miracles...But He only a few who believed Him in His hometown...They knew He was Joseph and Mary's Son, a Carpenter...They were reluctant to believe who He really was...They thought He was like any other man and were saying, you must heal your Own Self, your Own problems, before we believe in You...Physician, heal Yourself is meant from His hometown people, that we want to see proof...Jesus was given skepticism and rejected by those who knew Him best and had seen Him grow up...
The hometown crowd thought or did they think He could do even greater miracles in His hometown or did they expect nothing because they knew Him and had seen Him grow up and therefore, had little faith He was the Messiah???...
Jesus was not completely accepted in His hometown...Jesus maybe telling us we should attend to our own faults, instead of pointing out the faults of others....
