Marley was dead: to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. The register of his burial was signed by the clergyman, the clerk, the undertaker, and the chief mourner. Scrooge signed it: and Scrooge’s name was good upon ’Change, for anything he chose to put his hand to. Old Marley was as dead as a door-nail.

Scrooge closed the window, and examined the door by which the Ghost had entered. It was double-locked, as he had locked it with his own hands, and the bolts were undisturbed. He tried to say “Humbug!” but stopped at the first syllable. And being, from the emotion he had undergone, or the fatigues of the day, or his glimpse of the Invisible World, or the dull conversation of the Ghost, or the lateness of the hour, much in need of repose; went straight to bed, without undressing, and fell asleep upon the instant.

Scrooge cerró la ventana y examinó la puerta por la que había entrado el Fantasma. Estaba doblemente cerrada, como él mismo la había cerrado con sus propias manos, y los cerrojos estaban intactos. Intentó decir “¡Tonterías!”, pero se detuvo en la primera sílaba. Y, debido a la emoción que había experimentado, o al cansancio del día, o a su vistazo al Mundo Invisible, o a la aburrida conversación del Fantasma, o a lo avanzado de la hora, muy necesitado de reposo, se fue directo a la cama, sin desvestirse, y se quedó dormido al instante.

“I don’t know what to do!” cried Scrooge, laughing and crying in the same breath; and making a perfect Laocoön of himself with his stockings. “I am as light as a feather, I am as happy as an angel, I am as merry as a schoolboy. I am as giddy as a drunken man. A merry Christmas to everybody! A happy New Year to all the world. Hallo here! Whoop! Hallo!”

"¡No sé qué hacer!" gritó Scrooge, riendo y llorando al mismo tiempo, y enredándose completamente con sus calcetines como un perfecto Laocoonte. "Soy tan ligero como una pluma, soy tan feliz como un ángel, soy tan alegre como un colegial. He had no further intercourse with Spirits, but lived upon the Total Abstinence Principle, ever afterwards; and it was always said of him, that he knew how to keep Christmas well, if any man alive possessed the knowledge. May that be truly said of us, and all of us! And so, as Tiny Tim observed, God bless Us, Every One!
