Free Play is the second mode of play available after selecting a stage, and is unlocked after Story Mode is completed. In this mode, any Character that has been unlocked can be selected, and their abilities are used to access areas that were inaccessible in Story.
The main goal of Free Play is to find all 10 Mini-Kit Canisters that litter the stage, you'll need the extra abilities to get them all. Collecting all 10 unlocks another Character for purchase from the Cantina Bar.
It is also only possible to get some True Jedi's in Free Play, these levels are Jabba's Palace, and Emperor Fight. To a certain extent, Cloud City Rescue is also only possible in Free Play, but only if you get really unlucky in Story.
There are a few character types in this game, they are as follows:
- Astromech - Astromech Droids are the most useful type of Droid. They can access Astromech panels, but can also Hover over pits. Astromech Characters are: R2-D2, R2-Q5.
- Blaster - Blaster characters use various blasters to fight their enemies. Unlike Jedi, they can fight enemies from a long distance. In this game only, they are the only characters who can build objects. Blaster Characters include: Princess Leia, Han Solo, Luke Skywalker (Episode IV Versions only), Chewbacca etc.
- Boxer - These guys use brute force to attack enemies. They can Build, but lack the range of Blasters and deflecting property of Lightsabers. Boxer characters include: Baby Rancor.
- Droid - These guys are useless. They rarely have anything going for them and are there purely to have the Character in the game. Droid characters include: MSE-6.
- Hover - Hover characters hover instead of Jump, allowing them to cross long distances using their Hover ability. Hover characters include: The Astromech Droids, Boba Fett
- Jedi - These guys are the bringers of Peace and Justice in the Galaxy. Their weapon is a Lightsaber, which is used to fight enemies close up. They can also Jump Higher and use the force on various objects. They cannot however, build objects. Jedi characters include: Obi Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker (Episode V and VI Versions) and Yoda.
- Protocol - Protocol Droids are very similar to droids, with the added ability to use Protocol Panels. That's it. Protocol characters include: C-3PO, K-3PO.
- Sith - Sith are the opposite of Jedi. In this game, they are the exact same as Jedi. Sith characters include: Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine.
