Tom Evans rode five winners under National Hunt rulers in the 1950s, starting with a victory on Burnt Grass in the Dyke Selling Hurdle at Plumpton on October 11, 1954.
Nearly 18 months later he doubled his score when Cloche d’Ecosse won the Juvenile Selling Hurdle at Taunton on March 22, 1955. Trained by Tommy Cross, the five-year-old never ran again, and there was another long gap before winner number three came along, when Lloyd Liebes, also trained by Tommy Cross, took the Dartmeet Novices’ Hurdle (Division 1) at Newton Abbot on September 8, 1956, beating Prudent Storm, the mount of Don Bryan, by a short head.
Having ridden one winner in each of the last three seasons, Tom drew a blank in the 1957/58 campaign but finally rode his fourth winner when Lady Bland landed the Hove Three-Year-Old Hurdle at Plumpton on September 24, 1958 by eight lengths. She had made an encouraging start to her career over jumps by finishing third at Devon & Exeter two weeks earlier but that Plumpton success was the only race she ever won.
Tom’s final success came at Folkestone on September 8, 1959, when Vals Orphan, again trained by Tommy Cross, had a margin of 12 lengths to spare at the end of the Shorncliffe Three-Year-Old Hurdle. Unfortunately for Tom, the filly changed stable to that of Doug Marks before her next start, which she won in the hands of Johnnie Gilbert.
During his career, Tom never had more than two dozen rides in a season. He relinquished his licence after the 1960/61 campaign.
