Frank Eden

Article by Chris Pitt

Manchester lad Frank Eden commenced his apprenticeship with Ted Smyth at Epsom in 1961. He scored his first success on his 17th mount in public, aboard Smyth’s three-year-old filly Tammany, beating Royal Tree (ridden by Willie Carson) by three lengths in the Apprentices’ Handicap Plate at Folkestone on August 12, 1963. That was his sole success of the season.

He rode four winners in 1964, all of them for Ted Smyth, the first being on a gelding with the unappealing name of Scrubber at Birmingham in May. He won again on Scrubber at Wolverhampton the following month and later in the season landed a Newbury apprentices’ nursery handicap on Golden Shadows.

Scrubber got Frank off the mark for 1965 when winning a seven-furlong seller at Sandown in June. Rapella became the seventh winner of his career at Brighton later that month. His last two victories came courtesy of Ted Smyth’s three-year-old Yacci in August, the second of those being at Chepstow on Bank Holiday Monday.

Frank failed to ride a winner in 1966, the nearest he got being a second place finish on Duke Street in a Goodwood apprentices’ handicap on August 18. He relinquished his licence before the end of that season.

Frank Eden’s winners were, in chronological order:

1. Tammany, Folkestone, August 12, 1963

2. Scrubber, Birmingham, May 19, 1964

3. Mont, Birmingham, June 22, 1964
