Arthur Eubank

1935 - 2013

Born on February 5, 1935, Arthur Eubank was a successful north-west based amateur rider under National Hunt rules during the 1970s.

The son of a Cockermouth, Cumberland permit holder also named Arthur, Arthur Eubank Junior’s early riding career could certainly be described as a slow burner, for it took him over 15 years to ride his first ten winners. The first of those was achieved on his father’s Young Turk in a Carlisle novices’ chase on October 8, 1956. He won on him again at Carlisle’s 1957 Easter Monday fixture and also at Hexham’s Whitsun meeting.

Arthur rode Young Turk to win the Anthony Marshall Trophy Handicap Chase at Kelso on October 26, 1957, his sole success that season. He won on him again at Carlisle the following season and also landed a novice chase on the Doug Francis-trained Moorcock II at Cartmel’s 1958 Whitsun meeting.

He rode just three winners during the whole of the 1960s decade before finally registering his tenth success aboard Pike Hill in the Bass Charrington Vintners’ North Lonsdale Novice Hunters’ Chase for the Fraser Cup at Cartmel on May 27, 1972, resulting in his claim being reduced to 5lb.

Arthur enjoyed his best season in 1975/76 when he partnered a dozen winners. He won twice on the family’s Rozinante, notably in the Webster’s Green Label Handicap Chase at Wetherby. He scored a notable victory on John Dixon’s horse Crofton Hall in the Billy Bow Handicap Hurdle at Newcastle. Arthur also won three races on Purple Gem, including the Stewart Wight Memorial Handicap Hurdle at Kelso. In addition, Penrith trainer Tommy Barnes supplied him with a winning ride on novice chaser Coparu at Hexham.

He went on to ride more winners but never again managed double figures for a season. One of his last successes was on Another Joyful in a novices’ hurdle at Carlisle on April 18, 1981.

He died in 2013, aged 78.
