Bill Escott

1893-1919

William (Bill) Escott was born at Lewes in 1892, the son of trainer Harry Escott and elder brother of Anthony (Tony) Escott.

Apprenticed to his father, Bill had his first ride in public in 1907. Aged 16, he won on his very first ride over fences, on Lord Rosmead, trained by his father, in the Hampshire Handicap Chase at Portsmouth on May 5, 1909.

He achieved his biggest victories in the 1912 Imperial Cup on Meridian, and the 1919 Grand Steeple-Chase de Paris on Troytown.

Sadly, just months after his greatest triumph on Troytown, Bill was seriously injured in a fall from La Releve at Auteuil on October 11, 1919. He died in a Paris hospital two days later and was buried at Chantilly. He left £3,516.
