E Enoch

E. Enoch was an outstanding French jump jockey during the mid-19th century. He rode in three successive Aintree Grand Nationals but did not complete the course in any of them.

His first Grand National mount, in 1859, was 33-1 chance Weathercock, owned by Viscount Artus Talon, the only Frenchman to ride a winner of the Grand Military Gold Cup. Sadly, Weathercock broke down coming onto the racecourse for the first time.

Enoch’s second ride, Horniblow in 1860, failed to finish. His third and final attempt also ended in failure when his mount, Diamant, refused.

Enoch died on Friday 30 September 1864 following a fall in the Brussels Chase at Brussels Racecourse, leaving his wife and children destitute. A subscription for them raised £200.

His death was reported in the Sporting Life of 5 October 1864.

At the time of his death, he was also the trainer to Baron de Herrissem. Charles Gougeon replaced him as the Baron’s private trainer.
