Flat jockey John James Ellis rode his first winner on Longford Lady in the Wiltshire Plate at Salisbury on May 27, 1897, beating the mount of future Derby-winning jockey Herbert Jones, by a head.

The fourth winner of his career was rather special, for in a match race at Salisbury his mount, Friar’s Cowl, beat the odds-on favourite Method, ridden by Otto Madden, one of the leading jockeys of the period.

However, there was to be only more victory, that coming on Swallowbrook in the Meldon Selling Welter Handicap at Newcastle on April 9, 1901, one of 45 winners trained that year by William Elsey.

J. J. Ellis died in November 1949 in Newbury Hospital following a long illness. He was 63.

His winners were, in chronological order:

1. Longford Lady, Salisbury, May 27, 1897

2. Carholme, Nottingham, July 5, 1898

3. Blumenaue, Northampton, March 29, 1899

4. Friar’s Cowl, Salisbury, May 19, 1899

5. Swallowbrook, Newcastle, April 9, 1901
