Robert Evans

 Well-known amateur jockey Robert Evans, aged 21 and from Kilmacanouge, Co. Wicklow, died on Tuesday morning, 19 August 1986, from injuries received when he was struck by a stolen car while cycling at Kilmacanouge on the Dublin-Wexford road. One of the country’s most promising amateurs, Robert rode a treble at the Island Hunt Point-to-Point races at Banntown near Gorey in April. Robert was also runner-up for the previous season’s South-Eastern Point-to-Point Jockeys Championship sponsored by Wexford Town businessman Mr Dermot Traynor. 

The 22-year-old hit-and-run driver responsible was on temporary release from Shelton Abbey Prison and had a number of convictions, some related to car thefts.
