John Elliott

John Elliott

Although John Fortune Elliott held a Flat jockey’s licence periodically between 1910 and 1925, he never rode a winner. However, he fared better over jumps with nine wins between 1919 and 1925.

He had his first ride when finishing unplaced on Yelden in the Trial Selling Plate at Bogside on April 7, 1910. After that initial season he next held a licence in 1918, but it was not until October 27, 1919 that he had success, and that was over jumps.

He opened his account at Wetherby when Ladaile, having her first run of the season, took the Linton Juvenile Hurdle and, following a disappointing effort at Birmingham, doubled John’s total by winning the Wigston Three-Year-Old Selling Hurdle at Leicester on December 9.

Thereafter, he rode the occasional winner, the last being on Vesuvius in the Cummersdale Selling Handicap Hurdle at Carlisle on April 11, 1925. He relinquished his Flat licence after 1925, followed by his jumps licence after the 1926/27 season.

John Elliott’s winners were, in chronological order:
