Stephen George Emmerson had a few rides over jumps in the late 1970s, recording one win. Associated with Ernie Weymes’ stable at Leyburn in North Yorkshire, his first mount, Eastbrook, was always in the rear in the Ponteland Handicap Hurdle at Newcastle on November 17, 1978.
It was not until the final meeting of the season at Market Rasen on June 2, 1979, that he had his sole success. It came on the six-year-old Short Term, finishing strongly to take the aptly-titled Last Chance Opportunity Novices’ Hurdle (Division 1) by five lengths. It was the winner’s 13th run of the season, during which he had finished second on three occasions.
Steve was riding Short Term for the first time. He kept the ride the following season, managing one second place and one third place from six starts. However, a second win did not come and he had his final ride at Sedgefield on March 25, 1980, when Cajosa finished a well-beaten fourth in the Darlington Novices’ Hurdle (Division 1).
