Robert Edgeley

1907-1982

National Hunt jockey Robert William Edgeley rode a total of 44 winners under over jumps rules between 1932 and 1948 during a career compromised by World War Two.

He made an inauspicious start to his riding career under NH rules, falling on his first mount, Silver Lake, in the Juvenile Maiden Hurdle at Newbury on November 29, 1928.

He held a Flat jockey’s licence in 1929 and again in 1931, but it was on February 6, 1932 that he achieved his first success over jumps, guiding Lestebridge to victory in the Godstone Hurdle at Newbury.

He enjoyed his best season in 1933/34 with nine wins. He rode seven in 1934/35 including the only double of his career at Derby on December 18, 1934, landing the Selling Chase on Lord Puttenden (whom he also trained) and the Grangewood Handicap Hurdle on Big Black Patch.

Robert never rode a big winner, coming closest when finishing fourth on Huic Holloa in the 1936 Lancashire Chase at Manchester. He had another good season in 1938/39 with eight wins and also rode on the Flat in 1939 but without success.

He returned to action after the war and rode four winners during the 1947/48 campaign, the last of which was Paidmore in the Birkin Selling Handicap Hurdle at Southwell on April 19, 1948. He had his final two rides at Market Rasen on Easter Monday, April 18, 1949, finishing fourth both times, on Abbot Of Chantry in the Risby Selling Handicap Hurdle and Emerald in the Legsby Handicap Chase.

Robert Edgeley died in November 1982, aged 75.
