David Evans

David Thomas Evans was born on September 6, 1945, and served a five-year apprenticeship with Lowther Barratt at Oswestrry. He rode his first winner on Barratt’s novice hurdler Capabico on December 7, 1963, at Chepstow.

He enjoyed his best season in 1967/68 with 11 winners, including four within a four-day spell, all for Fred Rimell. David began by winning a Nottingham chase on Greenfield Girl on April 1, followed up on hurdler Rouge Autumn at Haydock on April 3, then rode a double at Cheltenham the next day on Joe’s Gem and Greenfield Girl. He finished the season with a Whit Monday winner at Hereford on handicap chaser Romany King.

At the other end of the scale, he once went more than two years without a winner before scoring on 25/1 shot Muckden Rock at Warwick on February 17, 1976. David was by then head lad to Muckden Rock’s permit holder owner Tony Pearman, who supplied David with his only other winner that term, Gay God, at Hereford on March 6.

Gay God was also David’s last winner, when beating sole rival Gervic by 15 lengths in a match for the Newland Handicap Chase at Worcester on April 6, 1977.

David, who had married Mary Perry, on September 1, 1971, and listed ballroom dancing, walking, swimming and squash among his recreations, rode a total of 35 winners.

David landed a double at Cheltenham 4 April 1968: Joe's Gem & Greenfield Girl.

David Evans died on August 14 2010, aged 64.
