A perfect trip for spring or autumn – Seebenstein Castle! Take the train to Seebenstein and walk 40 mins through a beech forest up to the castle. Explore the castle on your own or with a guided tour (only in German) and enjoy the view at the Türkensturz, a ruin from the Romantic period. There are also several circular hiking trails to discover! End the day with a pizza (to go) at “Pizzeria zum Spitz”, close to the train station, before heading back to Vienna.
Also interesting:
Luxembourg is an overlooked but very interesting country with a lot of diversity and multiculturalism. The three official languages are Luxembourgish, German, and French. The majority of foreigners, however, is Portuguese. Since it is a small country, it’s perfect for a short weekend trip (2-3 days).
Top Sights:
Casemates (underground military defense system)
“Chemin de la Corniche” (the „most beautiful balcony in Europe” with a view over the lower part of the city)
Grand Ducal Palace – the city residence of the Grand Ducal family of Luxembourg (Luxembourg is the the only Grand Duchy in the world!)
Restaurants with typical luxembourgish dishes (like “Kniddelen mat Speck” or “Judd mat Gaardebounen”):
Brasserie du Cercle
Um Dierfgen
Besides Luxembourg City, you can also visit the world-famous village Schengen. Here the Schengen Agreement, that led to the abolishment of internal border checks within Europe, was signed. Find out about European history at the European Museum Schengen. Enjoy a glass of wine with a spectacular view over the river Mosel and Germany at the winery “Domaine Henri Ruppert”.
Another interesting visit would be Luxembourg’s second biggest city: Esch-sur-Alzette, and just one train stop away: Belval. Here you can visit the university campus, which effortlessly combines modern design with ruins of the old steelworks that operated here until 1997. The modern, almost futuristic university library with 5 floors is also worth a visit and even offers guided tours! (see picture on the left)
