WiFi and Supermarkets
There is also free internet throughout the city, check out the Freewave app for free WiFi. You may also connect to the internet in your dorms:
Haus Erasmus: The WiFi password for the network “stuwonet” is: surf_and_study
Haus Panorama: There is free WiFi in the lobby.
For internet access in your room, visit the Computerreferat during their opening hours (Mon-Fri: 6.30pm-9pm). Internet costs 5€ until the 5th of each month. Additionally, you may buy a cable for around 5€ or your own WiFi router for 20€ for your wireless devices.
We have created Google maps for the areas surrounding each dorm building. For Haus Erasmus, click here. For Haus Panorama, click here. Notice that supermarkets are closed on Sundays (exceptions here), use the app “Öffnungszeiten Österreich” to check the opening hours. Here’s a tip for when you get hungry: Go to a Würstelstand (hot dog stand) and eat one of the many sausages (IiVP favorite: Käsekrainer)! There are also a couple of different food delivery apps if you don’t feel like going out: Lieferando.at, mjam, Uber Eats or “WU Food” if you’re on campus around lunch time.
Public Transportation in Vienna
For getting around with public transportation, use the apps
WienMobil and
VOR,
or Wien zu Fuß for walking.
Until you receive your “Semesterkarte” (semester ticket) from us, which is then valid from September 1/February 1 until January 31/June 30, you are responsible for your own tickets.
Vienna works on an honesty system with no ticket barriers at stations or permanent checks on the subway, local trains, trams or buses. You can just hop on and off. However, this does not mean public transport is free. If you get caught during a random control without a ticket, you will have to pay a large fine. You can buy tickets from kiosks at the subway stations and on the WienMobil app. Have a look at the Wiener Linien tickets website to find your best option: single journey, weekly pass etc.
