Eating out in Vienna
Some say it is perhaps too easy to find delicious and affordable high-quality food in Vienna. Here are some recommendations for your culinary adventures!
Eating on Campus
Take a look at this list of on-campus eateries!
We recommend:
WU Mensa (cafeteria/food market): You can add money to your WU student ID card and enjoy an inexpensive meal. Use this link to see the Mensa’s daily offerings.
Das Library Café: Here you will find good coffee, as well as pastries and lunch. Find the Tagesmenü (daily special) here.
Baschly: Mediterranean street food from a food truck located across from the Anker Bakery or inside the restaurant right next door. They also have daily specials.
L'Osteria: Huge pizzas to share!
Spar Supermarkt: An on-campus grocery store located directly across from the Teaching Center. Among other things, it offers a wide variety of pre-packaged sandwiches. We also recommend going to the Feinkost (deli counter), where you can order a custom-made sandwich (das Sandwich) or Panini. What a great way to learn some new German words!

Trinken Sie Kaffee? Do you drink coffee?
Vienna is very famous for its longstanding Kaffeehauskultur (coffeehouse culture), which was declared a UNESCO world heritage site. There are hundreds of cafés throughout the city-each has its own special flair. If you are looking for a place to enjoy a great cup of coffee in a traditional ambiance, we recommend the following Kaffeehäuser:
In the First District (Innere Stadt)
Café Central (touristy but beautiful!)
Café Landtmann (Sigmund Freud’s favorite café in Vienna)
Kleines Café (as the name suggests, this café is very small!)
Demel K. & K. Hofzuckerbäckerei (great cakes and pastries as well)
Im Kaffeehaus
die Melange = classic Viennese coffee+steamed milk
