At The Watermill Center, this live performance translates this auditory disorientation into a direct, physical social exchange. I will repair and repaint a physical cart, transforming its appearance to embody the dual identities of both the ice cream truck and the garbage truck. Pushing this "Hybrid Truck" through the Center's grounds, I will interact with the audience by actively "collecting their trash" (Get) and, in return, "handing out durian-flavored ice cream" (Give). Durian is a highly polarizing fruit in cross-cultural contexts; its pungent aroma is often compared to decay or garbage by some, while others prize it as a rich, sweet, custard-like delicacy.
By juxtaposing the acts of collecting waste and offering durian ice cream, the performance fuses the opposing gestures of letting go and consuming. As participants hand over their unwanted trash, they are met with an unexpected sensory intervention. This exchange of "giving and taking" demonstrates that globalization does not merely erase differences, but rather amplifies subtle perceptual friction in our daily encounters. Through this mobile installation, Hybrid Truck invites the audience to inhabit a space of cultural and sensory misalignment, prompting them to re-evaluate what we discard, what we consume, and how we unpack the familiar
