How to share a folder in Apple macOS

  • Apple macOS requires that user accounts must have a password set in order to authenticate access to a shared folder
  1. Open System Preferences…
  2. Select Sharing

  1. Select File Sharing
  2. Select Options…

  1. Select Share files and folders using SMB (Windows)
  2. Select check box you for the user account
    1. Input the password if prompted and select OK
  3. Select Done

  • Select + (plus) under Shared Folders

  1. Navigate to the folder you want to share
  2. Select the folder
  3. Select Add

  1. Select the shared folder in the Shared Folders list
  2. Select + (plus) under the Users
  3. Select the user
  4. Select Select

  1. Select the user account in the Users list
  2. Set the permissions to Read & Write
    • Note the user name

Network


  1. Open System Preferences…
  2. Select Network
  3. Select the network connection
  4. Note the IP address shown under Status
  5. Select Advanced…

Network


  1. Select WINS
  2. Note the NetBIOS Name value
