The HHS Speech & Debate team applied for charter membership in the National Speech & Debate Association in 2006. Currently, we have over 80 members on the team and we routinely travel with 50 students to tournaments each weekend. We are ranked in the top 1% of Speech/Debate programs in the nation in terms of team size and activity and were named an NSDA School of Honor in 2016! HHS has won 6 UIL State CX Championships (including 2 close-out years), a UIL State Persuasive Championship, UIL State Congress Championship, multiple TFA State finalists & champions, UIL State finalists, TOC qualifiers, and outround participants and has qualified for NSDA Nationals for the past 10 years running. Hendrickson is also the home of the 2019 NSDA National Champion in International Extemp, Rene Otero; the 2022 UIL Silver Medalists in Lincoln Douglas Debate, Afy Masoumi and Informative Speaking, Audrey Fife and the Bronze Medalist in Persuasive Speaking, Kaitlyn Nash! Afy was also the 2022 NSDA National 3rd Place winner in Extemp Debate! In 2024, Waleed Haider added a UIL State Championship in Congress and a TFA State Championship in International Extemp - Waleed also took second place in Extemp at the 2024 Tournament of Champions at the University of Kentucky. In 2025, Waleed added to his existing titles by winning the Montgomery Bell Academy Extemp Round Robin, Championing in Congressional Debate at TFA State, taking second place in International Extemp at TFA State, and ended the year placing third in International Extemp at NSDA Nationals.
