Has a number of patients to attend to in a limited amount of time
Examination room will contain medical equipment such as needles, knives and other metal tools
This may impact on person centred care focus, steering the doctor towards a task focused approach
Whilst these are stored away from patients this may make the doctor’s preconceptions of dealing with a prisoner lead her to mention or demonstrate behaviour that could be construed by the prisoner as fearful and mistrusting
NHS structure means all patients deserve equal care regardless of role in society.
Middle Class background of doctor.
Doctor has a tattoo and went through a rebellious phase against her parents authority when she was in her late teens.
This may not be what all doctors believe and any prejudice they have for prisoners may impact on this encounter.
This may lead to some prejudice from the doctor towards a prisoner who they perceive as working class.
This could act as an area of common ground between doctor and prisoner, helping to engage trust in their relationship.
Focus on high achievement and money earning
This may lead the doctor to a more functionalist perspective on society, viewing the prisoner as a deviant that helps define the role of law enforcement and the legal framework and is entirely of the prisoners choosing rather than caused by the pressure of an unequal society
Doctor may have concerns over the time and paperwork involved in treating NHS patients, especially prisoners with the extra security concerns and protocols.
This may come across as conscious or unconscious bias against the prisoner.
