The Togruta people were sentient beings known for their spirituality and connection to all wildlife and the Force. Evolving from primordial species on the planet of Shili, the Togruta were distinguished by their elegant montrals that descended into long and graceful twin Lekku, which often slung unto the chest of the Togruta. There was an additional Lekku growth in the back of the head, but it was not as long or prominent as the frontal pair.
History: The history of the Togruta dates back to their evolution from their primitive species. Upon evolving into sentient beings, the Togruta were often prey to the predatory animals on their homeworld, Shili. Because of this, the Togruta were forced to make their homes suspended from tree-tops or in hard-to-reach areas. Upon the discovery of the Togruta in 25,000 BBY, there was a pacifist colony formed in Kiros. In Kiros, the Togruta would not hunt and instead eat mainly vegetarian diets. Additionally, they were not allowed to carry weapons and would not have any in storage, even for emergencies. This allowed them to be easily conquered during the Clone Wars.
Society and Culture: The Togruta culture was very religious and complex. While they were known for their kindness and peacefulness, they could also be ruthless and considered savages. This is shown in their method of hunting. The hunt is an important part of the history of the Togruta as they developed much of their religion and cultural beliefs out of hunting. The Togruta would hunt in the tall grass using their Montrals to find prey through echolocation. They would also shed boots to hunt because they believed that it brought them closer to the earth and heightened their senses. During the hunt, small groups were formed to cover more ground and search for prey more easily. The preferred food of the Togruta people is the small rodent called the Thimiar. Their method of killing was a painless one, it involves the sinking of fangs into the spinal cord of the rodent and watching as the dead mammal experiences spasms shortly after being killed. This is where the myth of Togruta having venomous fangs sprung from. Of course, though it is untrue, the Togruta have never denied the fact because it serves as a factor in their intimidating of other sentient species. The Togruta being recognized as savages is a misconception of their culture. The Togruta were independent first and foremost, this stands even during a group effort such as the hunt. If a Togruta gets stranded behind during the hunt, the others will rarely double back to assist them. For this reason, many Togruta did not die of old age, and instead, found their demise during hunting. The Togruta understood and respected the cycle of life, which is why they did not help a struggling Togruta; if it was their time to go, they would go. That is the religious philosophy the Togruta people shared concerning life and death. Lastly, as a Force-based religious culture, the Togruta people often got together and meditated with each other and as a family. The sense of community outside of events such as the hunt was very strong and many Togruta considered friends to be equal to family in social and emotional value.
Appearance and Biology: The Togruta were humanoid beings capable of speaking Galactic Basic and Togruti (their mother tongue). The average life expectancy of a Togruta was anywhere from 75-84 years of age, that is if they did not fall victim to the hunt first. Standing at approximately 1.7 meters in height with a bipedal posture, the differences between humans and Togruta are very distinct. As previously mentioned the Togruta people had a set of two montrals on their heads, which were hollow and bone-like. These montrals descended into a trio of fleshy and sensitive Lekku which continued to grow throughout the life of a Togruta. The lekku and montrals of a Togruta could sense movement and direction through echolocation and are thought to have been able to sense pheromones as well. The Jedi Order had inducted several members of the species into the Order, the most famous of them being Shaak Ti and Ahsoka Tano. The Togruta equivalent to Padawan braids were Silka Beads, slung around the head of the Togruta and through the top depression between the two montrals. Additionally, a Togruta could have been seen wearing a headdress made from the bones of their most prestigious hunting catch, the Akul. The Togruta were also known for their unique affinity for Force Sense techniques. Such was due to their enhanced echolocation with the assistance of their hollow montrals. Interestingly enough, the Togruta may have had a remarkable affinity for the Force while also having an unnaturally low Midi-chlorian count.
