Description: A concentrated planet in the dark side of the Force, Korriban, also known as Pesegam and Moraband, was a dry and cool planet within the Outer Rim Territories. The planet was once a battleground as well as the known birthplace of the Sith species. The planet's terrain was not ideal for local fauna but was sufficient for numerous species. Even though the planet was quite dry, few swamps were scattered across the surface. Korriban was also blanketed in mountains and canyons, with several tombs and ruins due to its Sith presence.
Valley of the Dark Lords: One of the most famous locations in Korriban was the eerie burial site known as the Valley of the Dark Lords. The valley contained several tombs of dead Sith Lords, including those of Darth Bane, Darth Vader, and Ajunta Pall. The site was also called Valley of the Sleeping Kings and originated before the Jedi Exiles (pre 6,000 BBY). Within the dry valley were several Sith establishments, including the Sith Great Temple and the Sith Academy. The temple itself was the main location for Sith Lord remnants, whereas the Sith Academy housed all training of Force-sensitives. The infamous Exar Kun was behind the construction of the Sith Academy and was a prominent figure during the Jedi Civil War. Due to Exar Kun's efforts in 3,996 BBY, the Great Temple was virtually destroyed and resulted in the academy's upbringing. Also within the Great Temple was the Great Crystal, a powerful object containing all Jedi who perished inside the premises. The academy was later occupied and run by the Brotherhood of Darkness during the New Sith Wars.
Early History: The history of Korriban dates back to as early as 30,000 BBY (well before the founding of the Sith and Jedi Order), where the insectoid Killiks resided. Due to conflict with the existing inhabitants, the Sith species, the Killiks were soon driven off the planet. 3,300 years later, the reign of the Infinite Empire saw its way to Korriban. For some time, the Empire occupied Korriban, adding it to their generous collection. However, the Sith eventually united and drove the Rakata forces off of their world.
Dark Jedi: In the year of 6,900 BBY, the Jedi Order went through a dark period known as the Hundred-Year Darkness. The outcome of this period was the creation of the Sith Empire, at the hands of the Dark Jedi who were exiled from the Jedi Order. The most notable Dark Jedi was Ajunta Pall, whose remains were found in the Valley of the Dark Lords. Once on Korriban, the Dark Jedi were treated as gods. The ancient Sith species soon bred with the Dark Jedi, creating a new species of Sith. The surface of the Sith world became enhanced with the presence of Sith magic but remained unknown until the Great Hyperspace War.
Desolation: With the exception of numerous events and Sith colonies, Korriban soon became desolate following the Exar Kun War. It served as a refuge for Dark Jedi survivors and even saw the uprising of a new Sith Academy. A few years later, Darth Malak and Revan raided the academy in their attempt to find the Star Forge (which they later succeeded in). Once the headmaster of the academy perished, along with Darth Malak, the Sith Order soon died out, Korriban's purpose going out with it.
Republic Presence: In 3,954 BBY, a couple of years after the Sith Order collapsed, the Galactic Republic discovered Korriban's desertion, and quickly caught onto the previous events. The Valley of the Dark Lords was found raided, scavengers and grave-robbers making fortunes off it. Subsequent to the Jedi Civil, the newly reformed Sith Empire struck the Republic fleet in orbit around Korriban. The battle ultimately sparked a new war: the Great Galactic War. The Republic had no choice but to retreat their forces, leaving Korriban very vulnerable. Korriban was then recaptured by the Sith Empire and continued its long legacy of housing the vile Sith.
War: Nearly three centuries later, war stained the galaxy once more. The Galactic War broke out in 3,637 BBY, which inevitably found its way to Korriban. The planet endured several bombings from both the Galactic Republic and the Eternal Empire, destroying its surface. During the Clone Wars, Grand Master Yoda was sent by the Force spirit of **Qui-Gon Jinn(( to Korriban (at the time known as Morraband). Once there, Yoda was confronted by many illusions created by the Dark Side of the Force. Horrifying visions overwhelmed the Jedi Master, as well as the ghost of Darth Bane.
