The Pau’ans, a humanoid species, were native to the planet of Utapau. Known for their unique appearance and utmost hospitality, the Pau'ans also went by the Ancients and simply Utapauns. In the Utapau system, the Pau'ans shared their home with the Utai, which were given the nickname of ‘shorts' due to the shortness of their lifespan in comparison to the neighboring species. Almost immediately, the Pau’ans took over leadership roles on the planet. However, most seemed afraid of the species due to their appearance, but this was not the case. Pau’ans were one of the most well-known and kindest species ever in the Galaxy. Their harmonious nature could be seen in their welcoming arms towards visitors on their homeworld, despite their allegiances. The Pau'ans were mostly isolated from notable events in galactic history. However, they did play a part in the Clone Wars when the CIS (Confederacy of Independent Systems) conquered Utapau. With the Galactic Republic’s aid, they managed to evict the Separatists off the planet. After the events of Order 66, they opposed the Galactic Empire after the Imperials took control of the planet, and in its wake the “Declaration of a New Order''.
History: Civilization began in 57,000 BBY when the species migrated to Utapau after their homeworld's destruction. Few lived in the caves while the others lived in the top levels of Utapau. Over time the species mutated to become two species: the Pau’ans and the Utai. Both of them had very similar interests. Eventually, the climate change within Utapau forced the Pau’ans to live underground through sinkholes. The Utai welcomed the Pau’ans with open arms and the two species merged, living in an open space, and welcomed an alliance towards a joint civilization. The Pau’an Port Administrator, Timon Medo, was responsible for the merge and was held in high esteem for such actions. Not long after the alliance, the two species split forces over the planet, making more sinkhole cities for them to live in. During the year of 19 BBY, Timon represented 30% of the Pau’an population on Utapau. The Pau’ans were such an intelligent race that their influences around the city made up for the lack of numbers. Due to the trade restrictions instated by the Trade Federation, Pau'ans were incapable of transporting weapons and goods and were forced to surface new technology and a way of survival to live on their new adopted planet. Due to Utapau being located on the Outer Rim of the Galaxy, many traveled there during 49 BBY. This was increased due to the rumors of the waters on the planet having healing properties. There were even rumors that Utapau was the original home planet of the Tho Yor before it gathered Force Sensitives throughout the Galaxy in making the Je’daii Order. However, the rumor was debunked as the Order was founded a millennium prior to the discovery of Utapau. The Pau’ans did not want any sort of attention towards them as they feared that they would attract further and more potent societies to cause wars over the waters, though this did not affect their hospitality. Once found out they had no Force Sensitive or magical properties, the waters were left alone and guests barely came to Utapau afterward, leaving the two societies alone in peace.
Society and Culture: The Pau’ans fulfilled most of the legal and administrative duties on Utapau, as the Utai, the neighboring species for the Pau’ans, did not want any sort of work to do with Utapau. So they were laborers instead. Most Pau’ans were leaders in their early lives and it was most often to split them up into teams of Utai laborers. This gave them experiences that were later used in their life as Pau’ans were such nice leaders and they do this to the young to grant them experience and wisdom into leadership which will be used further down in their lives. With each city on Utapau being controlled by a Master of Port Administration, an honorable title was reserved for Pau’ans. These administrators were given help by the advisory councils for making decisions for the cities, turning to the Utapaun Security Force, which was a military organization that every city cooperated on including the resident skyships and warships, when necessary. Each administrator served in the Utapaun Committee, the governing body of the planet, and oversaw the planetary governance. However, the committee rarely made any major decisions as the sinkhole cities were able to function independently most of the time. Despite the differences between the Pau’ans and the Utai, the two species were able to coexist without conflict. Although the inhabitants of the different Utapaun cities often had more conflicts than the species altogether due to their philosophical differences. However, this did not mean that there was bloodshed. Although they had their differences and were argumental, it was rare for any form of physical altercation. When in times of danger, conflict, or not, they still united to protect their planet. An example of this is seen during 19 BBY when the Confederacy invaded Utapau. In terms of their style and culture, the Pau’ans used a long-range of various types of cultures and borne from the ancient alliance agreement with the Utai long ago and built it into the sinkhole walls. Pau’an settlements such as the Pau City Spaceport have split into different areas each a mix of architectural designs in contrast from the others. Despite being primitive and having a natural image, the Pau’ans developed industry in society, even though it was the Utai that did most of the work. The Utai didn’t mind being ruled over and being in labor; they even preferred it.
Appearance and Biology:
Pau’ans were a carnivorous race. They were known for their long fingers, gray skin, red tattooed pinstriped skin around the eyes, with a lifespan of 700 years. Calling themselves the Ancients, the Pau’ans were rarely found to be Force Sensitive, though was possible as seen with the Grand Inquisitor. Pau’ans could live up to seven centuries and had a very good sense of sight through their ability to see the dark better than others. They often wore higher clothes to heighten their stature. They were bald, pale, large creatures that had fangs for teeth, which were used for tearing up fresh meat, but because they were living in sinkholes, their skin was gray and gave them less light. As much as these traits may seem frightening for the species, they are, as a society, one of the friendliest creatures in the Galaxy.
