Sometimes referred to as Kel Dorians, the Kel Dor were a species that originated from the technologically advanced planet Dorin. They were also known for their renowned use of the Baran Do Sages, an ancient Force-using tradition. Because of their different respiratory system from most of the galaxy, they had to wear proper gear to ensure their safety.
History: Not much is known about the Kel Dor, as they remained out of most - if not all - of the primary intergalactic wars. However, the Kel Dor were aware of the Force long before their alliance with the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order. The most notable evidence of this would be with their extended use of the Baran Do Sages, which acted as advisors to the wealthiest of Kel Dor families. Initially using their powers on weather predictions, the Baran Do Sages would come to realize their natural affinity towards detecting and preventing dangerous events, something which prevented multiple wars and disasters. However, the number of Baran Do Sages would soon dwindle after the Kel Dor’s alliance with the Galactic Republic and Jedi Order. This would be due to the Jedi’s much greater knowledge of the Force, as well as the taking of Force-Sensitive infants, inducting them into the Jedi Order. Despite being viewed as eccentric wizards, some traditional Kel Dor families would still send their Force-Sensitive children to learn from them. Due to their dwindling numbers, the Baran Do Sages remained somewhat unaffected by the Great Jedi Purge, with most of them escaping unscathed and living relatively peaceful lives.
Society and culture: The Kel Dor were a relatively peaceful race, electing to remain neutral in many of the large-scale wars. They dedicated their time to perfecting their use of the Force, as well as the training of formidable warriors. As stated, they were a Force-Sensitive species, using the Force long before their alliance with the Jedi and the Galactic Republic - through the use of the Baran Do Sages. Much like human surnames, Kel Dor surnames revolved around ancient familial trades or jobs, sometimes deriving from a particularly famous Kel Dor in the family. An example of this would be the Koon surname, which translates to ‘explorer’. Interestingly, each Kel Dor name was based on the sounds that Dorin would produce due to its unique atmospheric phenomena. They were also kept short and monosyllabic because of ancient superstitions of the “wind spirits” of Dorin. The "wind spirits" superstitions were where the winds would mistake the child for one of their own and carry them away to be raised as a wind-child. This tradition soon became extremely sacred, with upper-class Kel Dor believing it to be bad luck to name a Kel Dor child away from Dorin. To outsiders, the name may not have any meaning to them, but to fellow Kel Dor, they would be able to identify the phenomenon associated with the name and understand the significance and meaning behind it. They would do something similar when naming objects and techniques, naming them after their purpose or effect. An example of this would be the Baran Do Force technique ‘ayna-seff’, which translates to ‘dead brain’ in Galactic Basic Standard. Ayna-seff would cause brain activity to become undetectable.
Appearance and Biology: The Kel Dor were a tall race, with a similar height and weight to Humans, with a life expectancy of over 70 years. Their skin tones would range from peach to crimson red, alongside dark black eyes. These black eyes would sometimes have silver irises - a mark that was associated with an affinity to the Force. They were a sensible and quick species but lacked a consistent constitution in contrast to other species. They were also known to communicate telepathically with one another. Due to their abnormal facial structure, the Kel Dor were considered an unattractive species. They had beak-resembling noses, which contained a gaping opening that traveled up until the mouth, a toothless fissure with low-hanging slushy strands. Having no teeth, the Kel Dor had two plates: an upper and lower hard-palate, which was only visible when the lips were pulled back. Finally, they also had multiple small, black tusks framing their head, which were extrasensory organs that gave them heightened reflexes. However, they had to wear antitoxic masks and protective goggles while in atmospheres different from Dorin. Since Dorin’s atmosphere was made of helium and a unique gas, other gases such as nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide were fatal. The antitoxic mask and goggles would filter out these gases, allowing them to breathe normally on other worlds, as well as survive a vacuum of space for a short amount of time. Without them, a Kel Dor would be blind and unable to breathe. The mask would also help amplify their voices, as Kel Dor would shout in a foreign atmosphere.
