The game is Called "UAZO : free as a bird". It's a cozy sandbox survival game where you play a bird stranded on an island full of magical ruins that you'll have to explore. The idea came initially from my love for the sandbox-survival genre. I wanted to make a pet project just to see if I could make one, and I also wanted to give players freedom of movement and verticality, hence why you play a bird. After a while I decided I would polish and make it a full game, see how it goes, and so here I am !
So far the development has been relatively smooth, but slow, since work on my free time on the side of a day job.
I'm working on Unity since it's an engine I already had year of experience with (from my day job). I did have to learn a few more skills like making music, 3D modeling etc... but it's been a fun journey so far ! I think I found a nice balance between my job and my project
I don't have a lot of issues regarding development itself. As long as I have enough time, I'm confident I can make anything I want. So the biggest hurdle so far has been visibility and marketing. It's a completely new and alien field to me. Lots of mental effort to stay motivated and active when it comes to posting on social media and so on. I think my game is relatively niche, and the art isn't anything that grabs attention, so it's been an uphill battle, but I'm not giving up so far !
I'm not sure I'm in a good place to give advice yet, since it's my first game and it's not even out yet, so I don't have that much experience to share haha. The only thing I would say is to make games you'd want to play yourself. It's a lot easier to stay motivated if you enjoy what you're making. And also, not to give up, even when it gets hard or even if no one sees you. Do it for yourself first !
It was weirdly cathartic to put all that in writing, so thank you!
