Hymble Ventures is a 3D platformer with homage to classics like Banjo Kazooie and Spyro the Dragon. However, I wanted to add a new twist by having relatable characters, humour and a compelling story about friendship. I grew up playing Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot which were the games that influenced me to make Hymble Ventures as my final year project at university.
I must admit it was tough, but I’ve learnt that it goes for indie development in general.
There were times where I felt like giving up and losing enthusiasm for my projects, however, the support from my team and community helped me keep going and I couldn’t be more grateful.
We chose Unity for Hymble Ventures because I have 7+ years of experience with it, making development easier and much quicker.
During mid 2024, we held the project back after facing rejections from publishers/investors. However, we were lucky to have feedback from which we made the decision to rework the demo. Quite bluntly, the game was not fun due to overwhelming mechanics which were to educate players about autism. After a month-long hiatus, I realised what was missing from Hymble Ventures.
So we spent a year doing less marketing and more development, so the game felt more enjoyable to work on as well as play.
Keep getting playtesters for your demo, even when the game is at prototype or pre-alpha stage. Always take constructive criticism on board!
This is important because it checks if your game is heading in the right direction in terms of its fundamentals (genre, style, USPs, hook).
If you feel less enthusiastic about your project, find inspiration by playing similar games with high positive reception and see what makes them work.
We have a Kickstarter campaign coming up, so we would love people to sign up to our mailing list to be notified as soon as we launch the page.
