This tutorial teaches basic low-poly modelling and some of the essential shortcuts in Blender
by going through the steps required to make a classic wooden barrel.
Start a new Blender project
Select the cube in the viewport
Click on Add Cylinder atÂ
Bottom Left of the screen
Reduce the vertices by half
Since a low poly model is a 3D graphic made with a minimal number of polygons (faces/vertices), creating a simplified, geometric, and often stylized look, ideal for fast loading in games.
The cylinder is the object in the scene
Hence we are in Object Mode
To edit the object further
We will work in Edit Mode
The shortcut for switching modes:
To add the rings around the barrel
We need to cut in a circular line around the object
This is called a Loop Cut
The shortcut for it is Ctrl +Â R
While over the barrel mouse wheel up
Now click to place the loop cuts
Open the Loop Cut and Slide context menu
This ensures we are at the center
To get more perspective on your 3D shapesÂ
enable new settings in the shader menu
Click the drop-down arrow
Material Capture offers fast, high-quality viewport previews without real-time light calculations
Turn on Cavity
Set to Both
In Edit mode you can edit
To widen the centre of the barrel
Hold Alt and Select a centre edge
This will select all connected edges
Separate the lid from the barrel
In the top right of the screen
Listing the objects in the scene
Double-click Cylinder.001
Close the eye next to the lid to hide it
Increase the thickness of the barrel
Select the Body in Outliner
Then click on Add Modifier
Increase Thickness to 0.04 m
To create metal rings at the top and bottom
Select all faces around the barrel
Rename it to Rings in Outliner
Set the Thickness to -0.04 m
We have extruded the rings
Finish the lid in Object Mode
Open the eye in the Outliner
With the Lid selected hit S
This is because thickness is 0.04
