Ropuka’s Idle Island is an idle desktop companion. It’s a small island you can freely scale and drag around your desktop. While you do other things, a grumpy frog takes a nap and sometimes cuts some grass around the island. Over time, you unlock new decorations and items for the island, allowing you to customize it according to your mood or choice of wallpaper.
The game started as a side project for a bigger game called Ropuka, but after playing with the prototype and seeing people's reaction to it, we decided to turn it into a full game. I’ve developed the game with my wife and talented artist Little Chmura, the music was composed by Begoña Pereda.
The development pre-release was short, but we’ve managed to release the game on time, and we are still updating it regularly since launch.
I’ve chosen Unity, it’s the engine that I have the most experience in, both from professional and personal projects.
Making an application that sits on top of your desktop proved to be more difficult than anticipated. The initial setup was easy, but maintaining compatibility on all the different hardware and software combinations required me to learn a lot of new things quickly and patch the game often.
Play a lot of games, make a lot of games, pursue your passions outside of gaming, try to meet and work with other talented people. Those experiences will impact your life and the art you create.
I’m really proud of our little game, and I hope people enjoy their froggy desktop companion.
