Hello, I'm Chris a.k.a 'Sudden Kebab Studios', and am solo developing a JRPG called Guard Break. My previous games have been Spud's Quest, and The Escapists.
Guard Break is a love letter to the JRPGs of the PS1 era- games like Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and IX. That period was what got me hooked on the genre, and I've always wanted to make something inspired by them. The low-poly style isn't just a nostalgic choice either, it makes 3D development more manageable for a solo dev.
As for the game itself: It's set in a semi-future sci-fi world, and features classic turn-based battles with a focus on characters and pacing. The story follows a group of mostly Arcadian agents as they face off against a rising terrorist threat that emerges in the aftermath of a change in rulership.
Development has been fun overall- there are always frustrating moments, but I am enjoying the building process and seeing everything slowly come together.
My previous games were made in Clickteam Fusion, a 2D tool. For this project, I wanted to try something different and jumped into Unity. I didn't put much planning into it- I just downloaded it one day out of curiosity and started playing around.
Learning the new skills that come with 3D games was a challenge- modelling, UV mapping, texturing, animating etc- all new territory! There were points where I felt completely out of my depth, but sticking with it gradually got me through.
If you don't enjoy the process, it's going to be a slog. Game dev takes a lot of time and effort, especially if you're solo. If it's not a skill block and you still find it a chore, it might be worth stepping back and asking why you're doing it. But if you genuinely enjoy it then you'll never find yourself unmotivated.
Thanks for featuring me! If you're a JRPG fan, I hope Guard Break ends up being something you'll enjoy.
Chris
