MAKER Parents

Resources for Parents to Promote & Guide Creative Fabrication at Home

Parents, thank you for continuing to build and encourage your child's creativity from home, whether your child is learning remotely, looking for a rainy day project, or just seeking general enrichment. We know you are wearing several hats at once right now, and we want to make the search for creative, safe, and fun building activities for your children as easy as possible. We hope the maker challenges on our site will provide a captivating and worthwhile opportunity for your students to continue the maker and fabrication work they are familiar with in our Hawken Makerspaces. If you are looking for additional books, resources, and materials, we've created this page as a guide for you.

What about safety?

Please utilize this slideshow of safety guidelines from our Innovation Lab as you set up structures for safe making in your own home.

Each project and activity in the Innovation Lab will be unique and have its own needs in terms of equipment and materials; from paper and tape to machines and saws. Our Lab Director and teachers will consider each activity’s needs with the age and readiness of the students in mind. As spaces are used by a student or classroom group, orientation to general safety and safety equipment will be reviewed before any activity begins. Use of any equipment will always be at the Lab Director’s discretion. Some areas of the Lab will require safety equipment upon entering (i.e. safety glasses) and our faculty will advise students of these spaces and check appropriate preparation.
