7.5 Ojo de Dios

(Gods Eye)

"Ojo de Dios (Gods Eyes) are ancient symbols made by weaving colored yarn around two crossed sticks. [traditionally] The center of the "eye" is made when a child is born. Each year, a bit of yarn is added until the child turns five, at which point the eye is complete."

These crafts are so easy to make and can be created anywhere! During quiet time after lunch, in a car ride, laying outside on a summer's day. All you need are 2 sticks and a bit of yarn or string. Some of our Middle School students created these last year during their Spanish units creating cultural crafts in the Innovation Lab. The basic form is an easy craft even a preschool student could complete, with help from an adult friend to start and finish. Of course, we encourage any maker to add their own spin and even try some of the more complicated cross patterns shown in the inspirational photos above. You could also adorn the end of the sticks with beads, buttons, pom poms, or other tissue forms.
