Those most devoted to bettering the lives of their fellows, after death, are candidates to be canonized by the Nyrellan Church and become saints. The designation of Saint is actually incredibly important. Once someone dies, their soul is inevitably recycled, unless lingering regrets keep them bound to the world as a ghost or ghoul.
The souls of Saints, once reborn, are known as Spectres. These spectres are, in a way, conscious. They retain some memory of their past lives and can communicate with their new hosts. Spectres are also capable of granting their hosts the ability to use Arms specific to them. For example, Iguro Hanazuma and Rinne Burgess, reincarnations of the same Saint, are capable of using the same fire-elemental katana. Unlike regular Arms, which can be damaged, broken, or lost, these are invulnerable.
Cardinal Spirits are the ghosts of people who are later canonized, and do not enter the cycle of reincarnation as Spectres. Their status as saints make them much more powerful than the average spirit. While there are more than seven Cardinal Spirits, the ones that follow are the unofficial poster children of the concept.
